Ziguang, a domestic electronic information manufacturer, has reopened its DRAM program after five years, and has set up a DRAM business group within the company. Diao Shijing, Ziguang Co-Chairman, will be the chairman of the business group, while Gao Qiquan, its executive vice president, will be the CEO.
For a long time, China lacks technology accumulation in semiconductor and other technologies. China has been in a state of lack of core and screen for a long time. China mainland occupies the general global total storage consumption. But the self-made rate of chips has always been almost zero, and the memory market has always been monopolized by Samsung and Hynix, Korean semiconductor manufacturers. China's market prospects are broad, and with the continuous improvement of technical barriers, it is necessary to seek an early breakthrough in memory.
In 2015, Ziguang planned to develop storage technology, strive to open up the computer flash market and business, and to this end, drew Taiwan's DRAM Godfather Gao Qiquan. Gao Qiquan worked as the forerunner of the American Fairchild Semiconductor, the Silicon Valley Semiconductor Industry, and returned to Taiwan to co-establish TSMC. Indeed, it is not too bad to call it the father of Taiwan Semiconductor. The future of Ziguang Semiconductor is worth looking forward to if such a senior person can take charge of DRAM business.
At that time, Ziguang wanted to enter DRAM research, because there was not much technology accumulation, and wanted to buy Magnesium Light, an American semiconductor company, but for various reasons failed. So the focus of memory research and development turned to 3D NAND technology, although it is also memory technology, but the focus is different, so it was a compromise for the lack of relevant capabilities at that time.
Here we introduce the difference between DRAM and NAND. The full name of DRAM is dynamic random access, which is very common system memory. However, due to the limitation of Moore's law, the computing speed and capacity of computer memory can not be obtained at the same time, so there is a distinction between hard disk, memory and registers. NAND is a kind of computer flash memory device with lower power consumption and better performance. Its performance is better than computer hard disk. It is more obvious in low-capacity applications with less than 4G. It is a non-volatile storage technology, which is the main difference from DRAM.
At present, the domestic storage industry is basically only 3D NAND computer flash technology-based purple light, and DRAM-based Hefei Changxin. At that time, Ziguang failed to find a breakthrough in DRAM technology because of the failure of purchasing Magnesium Light, so it set up Yangtze River Storage and turned to the direction of 3D NAND technology. However, the NAND market has gradually begun to decline. With the restart of DRAM program now, it seems that it is also a great decision, but also a necessary move.
There is a long way to go to break through the monopoly of storage industry. Ziguang can start from now on and shoulder the responsibility of breaking technical barriers. Naturally, it is very commendable. As for the future development, we will wait and see.
